Abstract

Mollusca are the largest phylum among the marine invertebrates, often defined as soft bodied animals. They were well known to have vast number of bioactive compounds, showing various kinds of pharmacological activities. The present study aims to analyse the antidiabetic activity of methanol extract of cuttle bone of Sepia pharaonis. Oral administration of extract at 100,200 and 400 mg/kg body weight in the alloxan induced rats for 30 days. Blood serum parameters such as glucose, insulin , urea, creatinine, glycosylated haemoglobin, protein, albumin, globulin, Serum Glutamate Pyruvate Transaminase (SGPT), Serum Glutamate Oxaloacetate Transaminase (SGOT), Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG), Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL – C), Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL), High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), Phospholipid (PL) and Lipid Peroxide (LP), Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), Glutathione Peroxidase (GPX), Reduced Glutathione (GSH) were estimated. The results revealed that a dose dependent antidiabetic effect with 400mg/kg was noted in extract treated groups when compared to diabetic rats.
